In keeping with my annual tradition to write a parody on a holiday favorite poem or song, this year’s choice is “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” While everyone else is having fun shopping and partying, even leaving work early, those of us in sales are busy trying to squeeze one – or five – more sales in before December 31. Even companies on fiscal years seem to be effected by the close of the calendar year.
Take a moment from the year-end grind and see if you can keep from humming this little ditty all day long after you read it.
It’s the most wonderful sales time of the year
With impossible quotas and non-stop selling
And everyone telling you sell more, sell more
It’s the most wonderful sales time of the year.
It’s the hap-happiest sales season of all
With those holiday greetings and discouraging meetings
When clients tell you their budget is spent
Let’s delay until next year
It’s the hap-happiest sales season of all.
There’ll be deadlines for making
Sales goals for breaking
And last-minute prospect requests to hear.
There’ll be pushy sales managers
All to handle with good holiday cheer.
It’s the most wonderful sales time of the year
There’ll be much phone calling
And orders will be stalling
When qualified prospects are near
It’s the most challenging sales time of the year
Yes, the most high-pressure sales time of the year
Oh the most wonderful sales time of the year …
Happy holidays, everyone. Don’t let the pressure get to you – but sell some more, would you? There are still 10 selling days left in the year!
